Sol Mar Restaurant has been a beloved staple of Newark culture since its establishment in 1969, and now, 24/7 Tempo is letting people across the country know that Sol Mar Restaurant is the best seafood eatery in New Jersey. Just last week, local station 94.3 The Point covered the story.

Sol Mar Restaurant is a locally and family-owned Portuguese and Mediterranean-style seafood restaurant nestled in Newark’s famous Ironbound neighborhood. With its convenient proximity to Newark International Airport and Newark Penn Station, Sol Mar Restaurant draws crowds from around the world. Owner Tony Nobre is originally from Portugal, where he owned a seafood restaurant in Lisbon, and has brought his unique style to the restaurant for decades.

Some of the most popular main dishes found on the menu include Grilled Sardines, Portuguese-style Cod Fish, Grilled Octopus, Grilled Halibut, and Chilean Seabass. Each month, the restaurant serves approximately 15,000 meals to its cherished patrons, including take-out. This equates to an average of 5,000 pounds of seafood and fish each month.

All seafood is procured through a rigorous selection process that includes sustainable, high-quality items from around the world. For instance, many of Sol Mar’s seafood highlights come from Portugal’s cold, deep waters, where the fish are more flavorful, and some of these varieties aren’t found in the U.S. Such varieties include octopus, sardines, and giant crabs called “Sapateiras.”

“We are recognized as New Jersey’s leading seafood restaurant because of the quality of our products,” said Nobre. “We consume a lot of fish and shellfish and always serve them fresh, as we receive them alive. Knowing how to treat this product, combining it with superior olive oil, and providing high-quality service are other key factors.”

The full listing of top seafood restaurants from each state is available at https://247tempo.com/best-seafood-restaurant-in-every-state/7/.

Seafood Combination

For those who want to celebrate the arrival of 2023 with a tasting of a delicious meal, Sol-Mar is a suitable option. On New Year’s Eve and January 1st, you can sample the most traditional dishes of Portuguese cuisine.

Whether at home with friends or family, the truth is that New Year’s Eve is a night marked by the abundance of typical dishes and sweets of the season. There are several recipes, including fish, seafood, and meat in general.

Codfish, for example, continues to be one of the favorite foods for New Year’s Eve supper, as it is associated with abundance and luck. Pork-based dishes are always a healthy option, as it is seen as an animal linked to abundance and wealth.

Among the specials on the 1st of January, we highlight the famous Cod Fish Lagareiro Style – grilled with a lot of olive oil and served with salted onions and potatoes, or our hearty Seafood Combination, an excellent option for two people with seafood delicacies. For those who can’t do without rice, our suggestion is Seafood Rice with Lobster or Octopus Rice with Shrimp.

The Suckling Pig Bairrada Style, crispy and tender, is always served on special days and whets the appetite of diners who prefer meat. Following traditions, the Goat Stew in Red Wine Sauce, or the Filet Mignon with Mushroom Sauce are among the options for your palate.

We remind you that on the 31st of December and the 1st of January the restaurant opens at regular hours and we suggest making reservations for your convenience. If the intention is to celebrate at home, we are accepting orders to take out or deliver in the comfort of your residence.

The traditions of New Year’s Eve in various parts of the world vary according to each culture. However, in most cultures, people welcome the New Year similarly, toasting and wishing each other well. We wish our customers, friends, and employees happy holidays and we say goodbye to 2022 with deep gratitude. May 2023 bring us many more joyful moments! Happy New Year!

Besides all the religious meaning that surrounds Christmas, gastronomy also plays a key role. The fact is that families are evolving, and celebrations are following the changes. It is still common for people to get together and prepare traditional meals such as French toast, turkey, and pies.

Sol-Mar offers a varied menu, as well as dishes prepared by our chefs, for families who are looking for a more practical way to celebrate. For those who don’t wish to burn all their energy in the kitchen before a party, this is an amazing alternative.

Our menu is full of delicacies that will arrive at your table warm so you don’t have to worry about cooking. The highlights include a whole Roasted Suckling Pig “Leitao à Bairrada” with a special seasoning made of garlic and herbs, as well as our delicious roasted turkey. Pre-ordering is required for these dishes.

I would like to draw your attention to the delicious Seafood Rice with Lobster served on Christmas Eve. This is followed by a Salmon with Orange dish, Oven Roasted Baby Goat, and juicy Grilled Beef Short Ribs. We would like to remind you that our kitchen activities end at 3 pm.

On Christmas Day, we serve Grilled Octopus à Lagareiro Style, Baked Codfish, a Portuguese holiday tradition, and Grilled Prawns with Mozambique Sauce. We recommend Filet Mignon with Mushrooms in Port Wine Reduction or delicious Roasted Veal for those who prefer meat.

You can also reserve a table via OpenTable in advance or by phone at (973) 344-3041. Because it is a unique date, tables can be disputed. We hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

Saint Martin’s Day, celebrated on November 11, is a secular tradition in Portugal, associated with conviviality and solidarity, strengthening family and friends’ bonds. Among other things, he is the patron saint of winemakers and restaurateurs.
Traditionally, this day celebrates the flavors of autumn with chestnuts and wine. It is a tradition to taste Magusto, new wine, and chestnuts, whether roasted or cooked with fennel.
This year Sol-Mar created two special dishes to celebrate São Martinho, our customers will taste a delicious Baked Cod with Chestnuts and a Roasted Baby Goat with Chestnuts throughout the weekend. Come and taste them with your family and friends at Sol-Mar!

The recipes of Portuguese cuisine are generally sprinkled with olive oil, some famous around the world. The cuisine has been influenced as a result of its geographical location, ingredients, and colonial history.

Although cod and sardines dominate the Portuguese gastronomy, there are a variety of other seafood dishes available as well, including cockles, conquilhas, mussels, and others.

Regional dishes also include meat, mainly pork and offal, which are used to create regional recipes and snacks, sausages, and ham.

There are many different types of Portuguese sweets that are famous around the world. One of the most delicious is Pastel de Belém.

It is also the wide variety of cheeses that makes them stand out. It is possible to taste flavors that are lighter, brighter, creamy, or dense in Portugal. Sheep’s milk cheese from Serra da Estrela is well known worldwide.

There are also a variety of breads that are part of the Portuguese gastronomic tradition. Served with every meal, they are delicious.

With a wide selection of grape varieties, Portugal is also famous as a wine producer. Port wine’s excellence is guaranteed by the Douro region, the world’s oldest demarcation.

Looking for a taste of Portuguese cuisine? Come to Sol-Mar, where traditional dishes are prepared with high-quality ingredients.

To determine the best seafood restaurant in every state, 24/7 Tempo consulted lists, ratings, and reviews from websites including Guide Michelin, Eat This Not That, Food Network, Gayot, Eater, and Time Out, as well as numerous local and regional sites.

Some are new American restaurants that combine world flavors with fresh, sustainably sourced fish, while others might bring Chinese, Mexican, or Portuguese flavors to the table.
